Kellogg’s and palm oil


The Guardian newspaper notes that Kellogg food group has “caved in” to public pressure and agreed to buy palm oil only from suppliers who actively protect rainforests and show respect for human rights. I can claim a small share of that public pressure as I signed the online petition organised by a campaigning group which I heartily recommend. Sign up at www.Avaaz.org

 The problem with palm oil is that forests in Indonesia and Malaysia are being cleared to produce the oil and this is having a major impact on the habitat of the orangutan. 

It just happens that my nephew’s daughter is in Borneo on an orangutan conservation project as part of her gap year.

In my day there were no student gap years.  If there had been it would probably have meant a year on a building site to help pay your way through
